Blowflies (Calliphoridae) are an excellent, nutritious prey option for a variety of invertebrates, including jumping spiders, amphibians, and reptiles. Their active movement and quick flight patterns provide an engaging feeding experience for pets, helping to stimulate their natural hunting behaviors.

Adult blowflies typically measure around 6-14 millimeters, making them an ideal size for small to medium-sized invertebrates. For jumping spiders in particular, blowflies offer both nutritional benefits and valuable enrichment, encouraging them to stay physically active and mentally stimulated through dynamic hunting.

How to Prepare and Feed Blowflies:
Blowflies are known for their speed, so it’s recommended to cool them down slightly before feeding. Place the blowfly pupae in the refrigerator for a few minutes to temporarily reduce their activity, making them easier to handle. Once chilled, release the blowflies into your pet’s enclosure. Your jumping spider will be immediately engaged, tracking and capturing these fast-moving prey. Our blowfly pupae are packaged with wheat bran to ensure their optimal storage and longevity.

If you’re not planning to use all of the pupae immediately, store them in the refrigerator. However, be mindful that extended storage can impact the hatching success, so it’s best to keep them for no longer than a few weeks before use.

Hatching Blowflies:
When ready to hatch the blowflies, transfer the pupae into a container with a paper towel or wheat bran substrate. Maintain the temperature between 77-86°F and keep humidity levels at around 20-40%. Blowflies should emerge within 3-7 days under ideal conditions. It's important not to add excess moisture, as too much humidity can deform the flies. If you’re incubating the pupae at lower temperatures, expect a longer hatching period, which could extend up to three weeks.

Feeding Jumping Spiders:
At Arthropods Canada, we find that blowflies are highly effective in promoting active hunting behaviors in jumping spiders. The swift movements of the flies keep spiders engaged and well-fed. We recommend feeding blowflies in moderation and removing any uneaten flies promptly to prevent breeding inside the enclosure.

Interested in adding blowflies to your pet’s diet? We offer blowfly pupae in various quantities to suit your needs, ensuring you have a continuous supply of fresh, stimulating prey for your invertebrates. Feeding live prey like blowflies ensures your jumping spiders remain active and mentally sharp.

Blue Bottle Flies

Arrived dead. Both times. Loved dealing with them when I bought my Spood, hes an angel in disguise. After the 1st delivery I was made to feel dumb over the delivery times, and then got excuses. I didn't even bother trying to contact again.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear you're unhappy with your order. I shipped it with Purolator on the 14th, and the confirmation of your pickup for the order didn’t come through until the 16th after a failed delivery attempt on the 15th. Based on the timeline, the order should still have been viable your emailing instructions I immediately after receiving confirmation of the pickup including instructions but we are not receiving any more emails from you after this point.

I emailed instructions after receiving confirmation of delivery, but I did not hear back from you afterward. My intention in sending the free test shipment was not to cause any misunderstanding or to make you feel bad. I simply wanted to confirm that you were receiving a complimentary shipment before the actual shipment was sent. This was to test if the letter mail option might be a viable cost-saving alternative for future orders.

This information was included in the note with your order and in the emails I sent. I sincerely apologize for any confusion this may have caused with initial test shipment using lettermail better sending in advance to your order after long Canada Post strike and additional delays due to carrier issues.

Best regards,
JOJO

Exactly what my jumping spiders needed

These all arrived while still in Pupae form and got me a successful yield of flies within a couple of days. The shipment took about a week to arrive, the weather was cold at night (below freezing) and mild during the day (above freezing to below 18°C). I didn't count them but it was definitely the amount I ordered and then some. It's nice to finally be able to give my jumping spiders some flies that engage their interest. Even my elderly Phidippus regius which wasn't taking any feeders I offered her (black soldier fly, BSFL, crickets, mealworms) no matter how lively the prey had one of these flies. She was only eating caviar for months till I offered her a blue bottle fly. The video included is how I got my old spider to eat, she struggles to walk, so I hand feed her.
