Blowflies (Calliphoridae) are an excellent, nutritious prey option for a variety of invertebrates, including jumping spiders, amphibians, and reptiles. Their active movement and quick flight patterns provide an engaging feeding experience for pets, helping to stimulate their natural hunting behaviors.

Adult blowflies typically measure around 6-14 millimeters, making them an ideal size for small to medium-sized invertebrates. For jumping spiders in particular, blowflies offer both nutritional benefits and valuable enrichment, encouraging them to stay physically active and mentally stimulated through dynamic hunting.

How to Prepare and Feed Blowflies:
Blowflies are known for their speed, so it’s recommended to cool them down slightly before feeding. Place the blowfly pupae in the refrigerator for a few minutes to temporarily reduce their activity, making them easier to handle. Once chilled, release the blowflies into your pet’s enclosure. Your jumping spider will be immediately engaged, tracking and capturing these fast-moving prey. Our blowfly pupae are packaged with wheat bran to ensure their optimal storage and longevity.

If you’re not planning to use all of the pupae immediately, store them in the refrigerator. However, be mindful that extended storage can impact the hatching success, so it’s best to keep them for no longer than a few weeks before use.

Hatching Blowflies:
When ready to hatch the blowflies, transfer the pupae into a container with a paper towel or wheat bran substrate. Maintain the temperature between 77-86°F and keep humidity levels at around 20-40%. Blowflies should emerge within 3-7 days under ideal conditions. It's important not to add excess moisture, as too much humidity can deform the flies. If you’re incubating the pupae at lower temperatures, expect a longer hatching period, which could extend up to three weeks.

Feeding Jumping Spiders:
At Arthropods Canada, we find that blowflies are highly effective in promoting active hunting behaviors in jumping spiders. The swift movements of the flies keep spiders engaged and well-fed. We recommend feeding blowflies in moderation and removing any uneaten flies promptly to prevent breeding inside the enclosure.

Interested in adding blowflies to your pet’s diet? We offer blowfly pupae in various quantities to suit your needs, ensuring you have a continuous supply of fresh, stimulating prey for your invertebrates. Feeding live prey like blowflies ensures your jumping spiders remain active and mentally sharp.

Exactly what my jumping spiders needed

These all arrived while still in Pupae form and got me a successful yield of flies within a couple of days. The shipment took about a week to arrive, the weather was cold at night (below freezing) and mild during the day (above freezing to below 18°C). I didn't count them but it was definitely the amount I ordered and then some. It's nice to finally be able to give my jumping spiders some flies that engage their interest. Even my elderly Phidippus regius which wasn't taking any feeders I offered her (black soldier fly, BSFL, crickets, mealworms) no matter how lively the prey had one of these flies. She was only eating caviar for months till I offered her a blue bottle fly. The video included is how I got my old spider to eat, she struggles to walk, so I hand feed her.
