Musca domestica (Common House Fly): An Ideal Enrichment Food for Your Jumping Spiders and Other Pets!

House flies, Musca domestica, are a nutritious and stimulating prey option for many invertebrates, including jumping spiders, amphibians, and reptiles. For jumping spiders in particular, house flies provide a dynamic, engaging feeding experience. The rapid flight and movement of house flies offer enrichment, encouraging your spiders to exercise their natural hunting instincts.

Adult house flies measure approximately 8–12 millimeters in length, making them a perfect size for many small to medium invertebrates. In our feeding regimen for jumping spiders, house flies are highly valued for their nutritious content and the mental stimulation they provide through active hunting.

How to Prepare and Feed House Flies:

House flies are quite speedy, so we recommend cooling them briefly before feeding. To make handling easier, place the house fly pupae in the refrigerator for a few minutes to slow down their activity. Once sufficiently cooled, you can release the flies directly into your spider’s enclosure. Your jumping spider will be captivated as it tracks down these fast-moving prey. For added convenience, we ensure that the pupae come in a container with wheat bran to keep them in optimal condition.

If you don’t intend to use all of the pupae immediately, they should be kept in the refrigerator until you’re ready to hatch more flies. Be cautious about extended storage times in the fridge, as this can reduce the number of successfully hatched flies. For the best results, store the pupae for no more than a couple of weeks.

Hatching House Flies:

When you're ready to hatch flies, move the pupae to a container with a paper towel or wheat bran as a substrate, and maintain the container at a stable temperature between 77-86°F with humidity levels around 20-40%. House flies should emerge within 3-7 days if conditions are ideal. No additional moisture is needed, as too much humidity can deform the developing flies. If you opt to hatch flies at lower temperatures, expect a longer hatching time, potentially up to three weeks.

Feeding Jumping Spiders:

At Arthropods Canada, we find house flies especially effective for encouraging active hunting in jumping spiders. Our spiders love chasing the swift-moving flies, which keeps them engaged and well-fed. We feed house flies in moderation, ensuring that any uneaten flies are promptly removed from the enclosure to avoid potential breeding.

Looking to add house flies to your spider’s diet? We offer house fly pupae in various quantities to meet your feeding needs, ensuring you have a continuous supply of fresh flies for your pets. The natural behavior triggered by live prey will keep your jumping spiders both physically active and mentally stimulated.
